Motus brings identity checks into trucking registration

FMCSA announced the rollout of Motus, its new U.S. DOT registration system, on May 19. The agency describes the system as a replacement for disconnected registration applications, with stronger identity and business validation.

What changes for applicants

The announcement describes government-issued identification, facial verification and business checks as part of the modernization. It also directs motor carriers to obtain a Login.gov account before accessing Motus. People who already accessed the FMCSA Portal through Login.gov are told to use that same account so their data remains available.

Keep registration work deliberate

Prepare accurate business details and use links from FMCSA’s own website. Do not send identity documents to someone merely because they claim to be a registration agent.

Motus registration and a Hotshot College Trust Profile are different things. A profile can help organize business information, but it does not create operating authority or replace the steps required by FMCSA.
